Smok H-Priv Review: Is It Really a Good Buy?

Originally released in 2016, the Smok H-Priv has become one of the most popular models on the market.

It features a box mod design available in three colors: black, white, and silver. These are all stylish options that some older users prefer to primary alternatives as they’re more subtle.

Smok H-Priv is a compact system, with a large, triangular button taking up an entire side of the main body. It also features a 220W battery, the 18650, and consists of two parts: the body and the tank.

This vape mod is a favorite of ‘cloud chasers,’ people who use vapes to produce the largest amount of vapor possible, but it is a good system for people with all preferences.

System Specs

Battery

Although it’s quite small for a box mod, this system packs a punch with a 220W battery that is almost three times as powerful as its mini alternative, which operates at 75 watts.

Size

The H-Priv’s size is one of its main selling points. The system is designed to be portable yet powerful, and it certainly delivers in this area.

Its aforementioned box mod is a smaller version of the TFV4 alternative, which came as part of the Smok Micro One kit.

Trigger Button

The large red trigger button is a nice design touch, removing the small, fiddly buttons that are often present on other box mods. It also creates a huge contrast on each of the three subtle colorways.

Display

In regard to display, the system features a clear OLED screen at the top of the body next to the liquid tank. This screen is so convenient as it displays almost every aspect of vaping you could ask for.

Once turned on, the company logo appears. After this, you’ll see many different figures, including coil ohm strength, the time you’ve had the button pressed down for, and the remaining life on each of the two batteries that occupy the main body.

Adjustable Settings

Unusually, the H-Priv doesn’t display the specific wattage it operates at. Instead, it features five adjustable settings to choose from: minimum soft, normal, hard, and max.

If you’re trying to quit smoking or at least lower your nicotine intake, there are few systems as beneficial as the H-Priv.

On the screen, it displays a puff counter, indicating how often you’ve used it. This makes it incredibly easy to monitor how much you’ve used it, especially as the system limits individual puffs to 12 seconds.

You can also set usage limits. When you reach your daily limit, you’ll get a message reading “max puffs.”

The H-Priv’s system features new technology that removes the need to preheat the coil, giving the user their desired inhalation strength instantly.

Locking Feature

This Smok vaping device also has a locking feature, which can be incredibly beneficial for users with children around.

To operate this, you simply press the button five times and a padlock will appear. To unlock, just do the same again.

Starter Kit Contents

Inside the box, you’ll find both the body and the liquid tank, alongside a few other things that make your vaping experience as smooth as possible. You get a spare 0.3ohm Clapton core in case the original runs out, a replacement tank with extension, micro USB charging cable, and a branded rubber vape band.

Many users don’t take advantage of the vape band, but I think it’s almost a necessity. It helps prevent damage and cracking of the tank, which can be quite an expensive accident to repair.

Unfortunately, the starter kit doesn’t feature the batteries, which can be a frustrating mistake to forget after purchase. Usually, the vape store staff will remind you to buy them, but it’s best to remember for yourself.

The entire starter kit costs around $60 depending on where you buy it from. It’s available at many websites and stores, as it’s one of the most popular models.

Performance Review

The Smok H-Priv is an excellent product for all types of vapers due to its greatly adjustable power.

Although it uses a micro coil, this has no issue with getting the most out of the juice you use. You can definitely taste the flavor of your liquid, and the cloud it produces is rich and thick.

I personally don’t like to use the system at the stronger end of its power because I find it overwhelming, so I operated it at the lower and middle strength levels, and it was perfect.

There’s very little crackling thanks to the coil, and the consistency in the pull is rarely seen in other devices.

Battery Life

Although this is dependent upon the specific brand of battery you use, most 18650 batteries have a lifetime of 300 to 500 recharges. This will last for ages, so I wouldn’t worry about replacing them for quite a while.

However, if you do want to maximize their lifetime, there are a few things you can do:

  • When not in use, turn the system off rather than locking it
  • Operate it at a lower wattage to extend the battery life
  • Use less frequently

Annoyingly, it isn’t USB rechargeable, so you’ll have to completely replace the batteries when they run flat or recharge them directly.

Pros

  • Wide power range
  • Offers usage limit
  • Lots displayed on screen

Cons

  • Not rechargeable
  • Ambiguous strength system
  • Large clouds can be off-putting to casual users

Final Thoughts

The Smok H-Priv is an excellent vaping device and one I’d recommend to all vapers. The price may seem excessive to those just starting out, but it’s likely that you’ll eventually invest in a more expensive system anyway, and this is one of the best.

It has very few flaws besides the ambiguous strength system and the lack of USB charge, but these are small disadvantages you’ll get used to quickly. It’s a rewarding, simple device that’s accessible to all.
